I did not plan this.

It is six months to the day since my last post. My computer is in the cupboard, my plan to replace it is currently "I need a new computer". Ted has moved to Tokyo and left his computer with Andrew. People say to me "go to Sydney and get Ted's computer", however these people are not Ted (or even Andrew). Further, Simon is on vacation in Europe and has left his computer at my house while he is away. Furthermore, Linda recently bought a new computer and is not using her old computer. So I still have no computer of my own. Nevertheless I have decided to resume posting.

At work I am being trained to replace Biff. The only person who knows how to do her job is Biff, so she has been training me. Biff is a self-confessed "hands off" trainer. If I don't ask her, she won't tell me. If I do ask her, it is always easier if she does it. Also, Biff is a self-confessed blabbermouth. If you ask Biff a question she will talk for fifteen minutes, but only sometimes about your question.

Biff was expecting to be here, training me, until September. On Monday Biff discovered (after at least four months of not asking the personnel staff who sit less than ten metres from us) she should have gone on vacation in May if she was going to use up all the leave owed to her before she reaches retirement age. I discovered this on Tuesday when Biff thought to tell me, but not before she told me about the trouble she was getting from her mortgage broker. In six weeks it was the first piece of information about my job she has volunteered without being asked. The job is now mine and Biff will be here to answer any questions I have until she leaves (on a still unspecified date). Status quo except the September quarterly release is now my responsibility.

So far today I have "learned" about Biff's European vacation plans and walking her dog.

This may not sound like the snappiest line from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), but it evidently caught the imagination of John Landis, who has worked references to a mythical film of this name into most of his own movies - memorably as the grotty British skinflick watched by an assortment of lycanthropes and zombies in the climax of An American Werewolf in Paris [sic] (1981).
