See You Next Wednesday
Sunday, August 4

Thank you and goodbye.

Canberra cannot put back my start date. I am helping to replace seven staff leaving the Wonderland office and if I can't start Monday 19 August they will (have to) find someone who can. This news did not phase my manager, he maintains I cannot have any leave before 19 August. So much for the compassion in my compassionate transfer. I'll cash in all my flex time to finish on Wednesday 14 August and good riddance.

I have eight evenings and a weekend to arrange my relocation. First of all I need to know if Emily is fit to fly. Dr Dick says this is most likely but he wants to do a blood test to make sure her elderly kidneys are up to it. In the meantime I have to put my material possessions on a truck, change my address with everyone, and vacate the Poca Boca del Infierno. If I drive I have to leave as soon as I finish work, if I fly I will have to put my car on a truck. Blah blah blah I can feel my character building already.

Whatever happens my computer is going in a box... so: many happy returns of the day Lindsay, Dave, Brianna & Sean and Graeme; See You Next Whenever.

Sports update.

Commentating nonsense I heard during the Women's Marathon:
"[She] can only run 90K a week due to injuries."
"It's all about tangents, the straightest distance between two lines."
"Nine months of childbirth to prepare for the pain, then straight back into training."
"[I have] a newfound respect for women that I always had."
"A couple of mums and a triathlete, what is happening to the Marathon?"

I have finally been told I can have a week off to move to Canberra and start my new job. Yes! Except... I can have a week off from 19 August, which is when I'm supposed to start in Canberra. How come Canberra can come up with a job for me in a day, but Townsville takes a week to figure out they want to negotiating my starting date? So I have accepted the position and invited Canberra to negotiate the 26 August start date with my manager. If it's not negotiable then I will move over the weekend, even if I have to live out of a suitcase in a motel room, rent storage in two cities and fly back and forth a dozen times, because this is ridiculous. My feet are toasty warm.

Hmm... the three Australians competing in the Women's 100m Freestyle are Henry, Ryan and Thomas. It sounds like a story by the Rev. W. Awdry.

This may not sound like the snappiest line from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), but it evidently caught the imagination of John Landis, who has worked references to a mythical film of this name into most of his own movies - memorably as the grotty British skinflick watched by an assortment of lycanthropes and zombies in the climax of An American Werewolf in Paris [sic] (1981). Ghastly Beyond Belief, Neil Gaiman and Kim Newman
