It is kind of a pain in the arse, but once you have some idea of the ballpark figure, it might be worth talking to a mortgage broker to see if they can get you a better deal (or a deal with conditions that work better for you). They don't cost you anything (they get a commission from the lending institution) and they take most of the pain out of the paperwork.
